AMURT & AMURTEL volunteers distribute food to flood victims in Gonaive Haiti with the assistance of UN peacekeepers from Peru. September 23, 2008.
Several hurricanes hit Haiti in September 2008. They brought heavy flashfloods and mudslides, submerging large urban areas with a potentially devastating long-term impact.
AMURT & AMURTEL distributed food to over a third of the city’s most vulnerable. That is about 8000 people per day. We worked with community leaders and small associations to determine the best way to get the food to them. That was a progressive and novel way compared to how things were done after the 2004 Hurricane Jeanne. We also directed a food for work program that helped to clean out 100 submerged schools which brought the children back to a regular life routine sooner.
