Overview

AMURTEL has been active in Ghana since 1984, providing a variety of programs, including schools, homes, libraries, clinics, and midwifery training initiatives. Education, safe shelters, healthcare, nutritious food, and access to critical information, are offered to those facing hardship and poverty.

We place a high value on education, believing social change starts with personal transformation.

Lotus Children’s Center and The Path of Joy Library and Primary School

The Lotus Children’s Center, established in 1992, is located in a very poor area of Accra, Ghana. The Center includes both the Lotus Children’s Home and the Lotus Preschool.

Lotus Children’s Home

The Lotus Children’s Home provides comprehensive care to girls who are abandoned, have no family, or are living in great poverty. The home has provided girls in vulnerable situations with high-quality care, protection, and education for thirty years. Depending on their interests and skills, our girls can go on to receive a college education or technical training for jobs. After the girls finish their formal education, AMURTEL supports them in developing self-reliance and independence, through jobs and professional development.

Lotus Preschool

At Lotus Preschool, children develop a love for learning. Most of our students can read storybooks by the age of five, which provides them with a strong base to build their academic journey in primary school. We are committed to promoting both core societal values and necessary academic knowledge. Our method of instruction is based on a holistic approach that emphasizes learning via play, music, art, and other multisensory means.

The Path of Joy Library and Primary School

Situated in a low-income neighborhood of Ghana’s Central Region, The Path of Joy Library opened in 2016, and the Primary School followed in 2023. During the academic year, the library provides after-school care for seven to fifteen children, and for forty children during the holidays. They attend English grammar classes with our volunteers, participate in a reading club led by the local librarian, and engage in other activities. These children are not only learning but also enjoying a range of creative pursuits that are lacking in the schools, such as local music and dance, modeling, painting, coloring, and practical lessons on healthy habits.

The goal of the Path of Joy School is to raise children to be compassionate, wide-sighted, and ideal citizens of the future. The new school is slowly growing and thriving by using a holistic educational model and building on our knowledge gained from years of educational experience in Accra.
