MATERNAL HEALTH CARE AS A PRIORITY
Targeting remote rural communities and focusing on safe motherhood and newborn health, resident midwives and staff are available 24/7. Prenatal care is instrumental in identifying potential risks to both the mother and baby during pregnancy. Women identified as at-risk or those experiencing complications following birth receive home visits, resulting in a dramatic improvement in the long-term health outcomes for both mothers and their babies.
As of January 1, 2025, 32,000 babies have been born in 12 AMURTEL-assisted health centers. Four of these centers are certified as Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care Centers, equipped with operating theaters, resident doctors skilled in surgery, blood transfusion facilities, and some newborn intensive care units. Eight ambulances are available to the health centers for life-threatening situations involving pregnant women and children.
AMURTEL has established a grassroots health education network of elected village maternal health promoters who track all pregnancies and births. They also facilitate monthly support group meetings for pregnant women.
