AMURTEL NIGERIA

Overview

AMURTEL, working closely with its partner AMURT, arrived in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, in 2010 to extend primary health care services to underserved communities.

AMURTEL’s model enhances capacity and lays the foundation for long-term sustainability. Our program seeks true development, ensuring that communities will continue to benefit future generations.

MATERNAL HEALTH CARE AS A PRIORITY

Targeting remote rural communities and focusing on safe motherhood and newborn health, resident midwives and staff are available 24/7. Prenatal care is instrumental in identifying potential risks to both the mother and baby during pregnancy. Women identified as at-risk or those experiencing complications following birth receive home visits, resulting in a dramatic improvement in the long-term health outcomes for both mothers and their babies.

As of January 1, 2025, 32,000 babies have been born in 12 AMURTEL-assisted health centers. Four of these centers are certified as Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care Centers, equipped with operating theaters, resident doctors skilled in surgery, blood transfusion facilities, and some newborn intensive care units. Eight ambulances are available to the health centers for life-threatening situations involving pregnant women and children.

AMURTEL has established a grassroots health education network of elected village maternal health promoters who track all pregnancies and births. They also facilitate monthly support group meetings for pregnant women.

ADDRESSING MALNUTRITION

Malnutrition remains a silent killer in many remote rural villages in this region. Our teams regularly screen children for severe acute malnutrition, provide ready-to-use therapeutic food, and educate parents on how to prepare nutritious, balanced meals using locally available ingredients.

YOUNG WOMEN LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

As part of our ongoing community capacity-building efforts, AMURTEL offers talented local young women the opportunity to be trained as qualified community health providers. 52 women have successfully completed the program, providing their communities with qualified health support and offering young rural women the opportunity to pursue a fulfilling career.

WOMEN’S ECONOMIC UPLIFTMENT

Since 2016, AMURTEL’s Economic Capacity Program, a cooperatively managed micro credit initiative, has benefited widows and women who are the sole providers for their families. Through education, peer support, and skills training, over 900 women have successfully launched their own businesses, transforming the quality of their lives and that of their families.

ADOLESCENT SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

The Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health program started in 2020. Through peer awareness sessions, the program aims to reduce teenage pregnancy, end female genital mutilation and child marriage, and to foster self-esteem and confidence among youth. Girls who have had to drop out of school due to pregnancy receive support to complete their education and learn a trade.
