Update on Hurricane Relief in Madison County, NC.

At the end of December, Amurtel was able to distribute handmade quilts and gift cards to women who had lost so much from the catastrophic flooding. In this region of North Carolina, quilting is an old tradition, and it was especially painful, on top of losing everything else, to also lose handmade quilts that had been passed down generation to generation. Along with the much-needed financial support, receiving the new quilts boosted morale among these strong and courageous women. And to make the distribution that much more meaningful, a church group from Maggie Valley unexpectedly showed up with bagged lunches and toys to give out, giving the occasion a bit of a festive air. Despite hearing many sad stories of loss and devastation, these hours spent in the Rollins community were so special and sweet.

Hitting landfall as a Cat. 4 hurricane in the Big Bend region of Florida, Helene left catastrophic destruction in its wake as it roared north. Though eventually downgraded to a tropical storm, Helene became the worst storm to hit N Carolina and Tenn in over 100 years, sweeping away roads, bridges, homes and livelihoods. Whole towns were swallowed up by the flood waters, destroying all access in and out of parts of western NC.

Amurtel has a team on the ground in the Asheville/ Marshall areas of NC, and we will continue to provide aid and support to those who have lost their homes and everything they owned.

Please give what you can as we help these communities get through this heartbreaking time.

  • Digging out the 2 feet of mud in those homes and buildings that did not get washed away.

  • Packing boxes for families. So many have lost their homes and are still without power or water.
